Assistive Technologies in Education
I can make my classroom inclusive in an effort to develop
strategic skills and aptitude to assist the learners effectively whether
intellectually and or physically impaired will benefit from using ICT. This can
be done by providing for the students’ keyboards which are engraved in Braille,
providing Braille printer so students can read, edit and present their writing.
Talking electronic books, large enough letters and numbers to manipulate,
as well as all visual reading materials will be in a larger font/ print or
written in Braille in an effort to accommodate the visually impaired. An
abundance of ICT resources will to be made available to cater for the vast
learning styles among the students. For the hearing impaired audio
digital hearing devices such as head phones, electronic pointing devices, touch
screen boards, large screen television just to name a few so that all students
can benefit from the learning, in an effort to make learning fun, interactive
and meaningful for all. Access for the handicap with their wheelchairs to
and from the classroom and bathrooms and other up to date mobile devices will
be made available. As well as enlarged pens, calculators, magnetic
numbers as well as a wide array of interactive magnetic manipulative for the
teaching and learning of mathematics.
With the use of technology in the classroom, learning has taken on a new dimension as everyone even the mentally, physically and visually challenged can benefit. Through the adaptation of technological tools, devices and software, all children have a chance to an education. (No one is left out).
Assistive technologies makes the classroom more inclusive as it provides support to individuals with impairments as it seeks to reduce the many challenges faced by children with intellectual, physical, hearing and visual challenges. It also allows students with special needs to function and develop their independence and to take ownership for their own learning.
