Learning Theories that Guide ICT-Mediated Learning
Learning Theories that Guide ICT-Mediated
Learning ICT tools are tools that offer a wide range of experiences, which are
all directly connected to the Constructivist Theory of Learning, Bruner’
Discovery Learning, and Kolb's Experiential Learning. These tools must have an
input, output and we must be able to process with them. They are devices and
objects used in information and communications technology. Examples are:
computers, cell phones, televisions, video conferencing software, radios,
laptops, DVDs etc. ICT stands for Information and communication technologies.
ICT has impacted and enhanced the teaching learning process.
Two ICT tools which can be used in the classroom are search engines and video conferencing. Search engines are very powerful tools which we take for granted, yet they are so widely used. The constructivist and the discovery approach to learning approaches that search engines can be used in. The constructivist approach caters to student centred classroom where they are actively engaged in the learning process. Students can actively search for meaningful information, then share and collaborate with each other as a community. It also allows for a deeper understanding of concepts taught within the four walls of the classroom. Thus students are able to expand their knowledge and take onus for their own leaning. Video conferencing is also a great tool which students can engage themselves in after they get home. There they can discuss, as questions, validate their assumptions, explore, analyze and discover. It is also a wonderful way for parents to get involved, keep abreast and to make a difference in the teaching and learning process. In conclusion, these ICT tools can all be used as motivational tools to inspire students, promote participation, and boost self esteem and self confidence.
